Yes they are disturbing but I always felt that people should see war not only as an option on a ballot or photos of victorious men and women… but see the ugly side of it which IMO is that side that counts

thank you for the post...

As an Arabic speaker and former Marine, I can tell you guys the BIGGEST challenge and the source of the greatest friction comes down to the language barrier. So many times, US and British troops are frustrated because they are trying to assure the Iraqis and Afghanis they are talking to that everything is OK, with no effect. For the Iraqis, it's very intimidating to have soldiers and Marines in your living room at night and not know why. I believe if we spoke each other's language, a LOT of the problems wouldn't exist.

FWIW, many of the interpreters (both native speakers and military) are horrendous linguists. The native speakers obviously speak GREAT Arabic but they don't get nuances of English. The reverse is true of most of the military linguists (not understanding the nuances of Arabic). I will be the first to admit that my Arabic suffers for this same reason, but it is also why I never felt skilled enough to accept a job as a translator. I wish more of these folks would recognize their shortfalls, too...

Just make sure to back my campaign in 2012! I might even get Alin 2.5 to vote for me!

You'd have my vote...but, you'll have to appoint me to something nice...like Ambassador to the Maldives...

If (when?) I appoint you, please make sure there's a reason for a Presidential visit 4-5 times/year.
