How does the new Audi RS5 stack up against the BMW M3? We take to the road a track to see which puts the biggest smile on your face.
By Mat Watson October 2010 If you have about £57,000 to spend on a car and you want something that’s super desirable and insanely fast, the new Audi RS5 could be just what you are looking for.
Based on the A5 coupe, it features a subtle body kit with wider wheel arches, larger rims, and a shiny grille. But, being an Audi, the RS5 is less about the show and more about the go. Because under the bonnet lies a 4.2-litre V8 with a neck-snapping 444bhp that’s capable of 0-62mph in just 4.6 seconds.
And to make the most of all that performance, the RS5 has the latest version of Audi’s Quattro all wheel drive system which can send more than 80 per cent of the power to the rear wheels. On top of this there’s a torque vectoring sports rear differential which makes the most of all the available grip.
But is the RS5 as good as an M3? The BMW may be getting on a bit now but it has more than 400bhp and similar performance figures to the Audi. Plus, it’s now available with a new Competition Pack which includes lowered suspension and upgrades to its dual clutch gearbox. And this breathes new life into the old dog. So who is better at super coupes? Ingolstadt or Munich?
