Checked Out an R8 V10 Today
I checked out an R8 V10 today at a dealer in the valley. But I didn't get to drive it, which was the whole point in going to the dealer. But I'll get to that in a minute.
The car was Sepang Blue with Carbon side blade and limestone seats with a black dash and it was drop dead beautiful. I had thought that I didn't like Sepang in pics. But in person, the car was just striking. Sepang has to be the color to get. The standard Y spoke V10 wheels actually look awesome in person. This particular car also had DSG, extended leather, alcantara hedliner and carbon fiber inlays. The sticker was at $168K.
I learned that the carbon fiber engine cover actually comes standard on the V10 (a $3,600 option on the V8), thus making the V10 an even better value that I originally thought. To spec out a V8 with the same options that come standard on the V10, you'd have to pay $130K for the V8. Since the V10 is only $146K, that means Audi is charging a mere $16K for the V10. If that's not a complete freaking bargain, I don't know what is.
So I asked the dealer if I could drive it and he says that I can if we can agree on some numbers. And the following conversation ensued:
Me (befuddled): "What, are you guys looking for a premium on the car?"
Dealer: "Yes, we're asking $213K."
Me: "Well good luck with that, ha ha. There's a dozen V10s on Auto Trader for MSRP. Plus, for that kind of money, I could get a Lambo LP560 and for $180K I could get a slightly used Lambo LP560."
Dealer: "Yeah, you're not the first person to say that. But that's the price that my manager set for the car. But ultimately, we'll sell it at where the market is."
Me: "Well, let's talk in a month or so after the spyder is introduced in Frankfurt and the hype dies down a little. I really want the spyder but might take a coupe if the spyder isn't going to make it to the states for a while."
Dealer: "Well if I offered this car to you for MSRP would you take it today?"
Me (cracking up): "I might possibly take the coupe for MSRP but I really want to wait and see when Audi is going to release the spyder."
Amazing how quickly the price dropped by $45K! I don't think these Audi dealers are used to negotiating above sticker.
