NYT: Mercedes-Benz Takes Its Technology to the Water
"Cigarette Racing has teamed with Mercedes-Benz to produce a technologically edgy custom 46-foot AMG Cigarette Rider, which introduces the company’s 46-foot product line.
Inspired by the 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG sports car, the boat is powered by a pair of Mercury Racing’s twin turbo-charged, 552-cubic-inch quad-cam, 1,350-horsepower engines. Running on 92-octane fuel, the engines can propel the boat to more than 130 miles per hour.
First shown in February at the Miami Boat Show, the boat is AMG Alubeam Silver and features the AMG logo in AMG Designo Mystic White. Inside, its upholstery resembles the two-tone porcelain and white leather offered on the SLS. The dashboard is automobile inspired.
“Our customer bases are very similar — affluent captains of industry, people who are very successful and want the finest cars and boats,” said Rob Moran, a Mercedes-Benz spokesman. To his knowledge, he said, this is the auto producer’s first nautical foray.
The project’s idea came from Skip Braver, Cigarette president, chief executive and car enthusiast. He wanted to build a counterpart to what he views as the ultimate sports car (Mr. Braver owns an SLS AMG, which has a base price of $183,000). The SLS AMG has an aluminum frame body and a 6.3-liter V-8 that produces 563 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque.
During the boat’s design, Mercedes-Benz sent Cigarette prototype SLS parts and a preproduction vehicle for photographs. Representatives visited each other’s factories, examining paints and processes, engineering and materials. Construction took six months.
The boat is for sale for about $980,000. Cigarette, which is handling marketing, also has orders for more AMG boats, although Mr. Braver wouldn’t say how many. They are available on Nov. 1."

Hold up! Mercedes Benz commissioned the boat for AMG. The engine technology was designed and put to production by Mercury Marine. It is a new groundbreaking engine completely engineered by Mercury utilizing their own block.

I look at it like this, Mercedes is in the biz with AMG of building extremely capable street cars like the Black series and the SLS. More so in the CLK GTR and GT1's which were quite seriously race cars that were forced by the FIA to be made street legal and homologate and sell a handful to the Ahem, "general public". Great automotive engines. Why not partner with the best marine engine builder?
If there is a new truly groundbreaking design of an engine as dynamic and capable as the Mercury and AMG had the ability to pair with it why not. A twin turbo nine litre engine producing 1300/1350 HP? Development costs must have been tens of millions, why would AMG not use it? One of the best performance automotive engines in the world, AMG. One of the best performance marine engines, and props, stern drives and transmissions, Mercury Marine. Period.
