600 for sure. Just take it easy within your comfort level. Don't join a pack of stunters from the get go. I did the same thing as you. Virtually 10 minute of motorcycle experience, got a GSXR 600 because all magazines said it was easiest got beginners and it felt most natural to me. 45mph felt like 150mph in the beginning, but if you take a natural course, before the year is out you'll wish for a 750, as the 600 has weak to end. I would recommend a low end torque bike, it's the funnest in the canyons and everyday riding. If not, you'll be changing gears way more. My 2¢.

Buy a 2002 of so Ducati Monster. Enough power, enough brakes, good chassis. You have a cool bike and it's about 3 to 4,000 with under 10,000 miles. Forget the R6 or the CBR. Buy a Duck.

No but seriously. My buddy just did the same thing and is contemplating his first bike. I recommended either a Sportster Iron 883 or Monster.

You bought a used Sporty? Sorry. I met a guy who had one of those. His boyfriend liked it very much. Upgraded to a Fat Boy.

600cc bikes are near perfect to learn and grow with.

SV650 s the way to go for a new rider. It has enough power to be fun for years to come. It handles better than you can ride it(me too, it's not a dig on you). There are not many plastic parts to replace when you drop it in the garage/parking lot.

There are tons of upgrades to make it faster, lighter, handle better...

It is cheap! And you can pick up a used one cheaper that has been babied.

Then, when you are ready I will sell you my 97 BMW r1100rs and you can tour the world in speed and comfort.

I started on a cbr600f3. Was a fine bike but wow could you hit triple digits with ease. Decided I wanted to travel and bought the BMW. Also have had dual sports, a monster900 a couple Harley's in the family so I have some experience from the slower non-racing side of the spectrum.

Thanks for all the input. I am still doing my research but this has helped to narrow down my choices a bit.

I would like to reiterate that I have the utmost respect for bikes and the only reason that I would consider something like a 600cc bike is that I tend to get used to things quickly. By this I mean I would rather not purchase a small cc bike and grow tired quickly of it, upgrade and deal with the hassle/expense. Then again, it may be better for me and thats why I asked you guys.

An SV650 seems like the best choice at the moment. A Monster would be a dream (even used) as I just love the look of them. From past experience in other hobbies I think it would be wise to start on something that I wouldn't shed a tear over if it were scratched. If I really like the hobby then I will have no problem getting something nice in the future.

The sv650 is a very good recommendation. get it used and when you are ready get something that really excites you. spend money on good gear - leathers, full face helmet, boots and gloves. Remember what they told you at MSF class - you are now qualified to ride a motorcycle at 15 mph in a parking lot. have fun and be careful.
