First Dirt Bike

I was reading Minid's dirt bike thread and it got me interested in getting one just to ride around on my property (out in the country) and maybe to tool around on in the mountains. I am just looking to have a little fun nothing crazy, maybe spend a couple grand tops. Any suggestions or recommendations? I literally know nothing about bikes. BTW I am about 5'11" 195 lbs.

Honda XR400. Not really powerful, but dead-stone reliable, very nimble, lots of fun, dirt cheap.

Slightly sportier, you could get a DRZ400, easy to handle, just that bit more powerful.

A bit more expensive and perhaps for more experienced riders, the recent enduro generation, WR-F 250/450 and CRF-X 250/450. The big 450s are rather fast, actually.

Honda 230 is great to start out on, and easy to ride. Best selling trail bike in the world. Low standover height is nice for frequent stops / starts. But eventually you'll want more power.

Anywhere in particular I should look for used bikes? I have been looking on craigslist and have found a lot, anywhere else?

Check out wheel bearings, swing arm bearings, linkage bearings, compression test, fork seals and just basics like brake pads. Throw the bike up on a stand and make sure that the wheels aren't out of true. people always seem to neglect spokes so that can lead to a decent price for fixing.

Check your local cycle trader, ebay and what not.

second that!

Get the most pristine bike you can get. And I don't mean plastics. Get one that has been greased/oiled regularly, whose bearings are not wobbly etc etc.
