Having sex with a 13-year old is illegal. Why? Because the presumption is that a 13-year old is not capable of giving meaningful informed consent to something that potentially carries life-changing consequences. But it's OK to send your child out to race motorcycles? Absurd. This is a tragedy, and not the time to dogpile on parents who just lost a child, but they *really* only have themselves to blame.

I'm a strong believer in motorsports being off-limits to children as participants, until they're old enough to contemplate their own mortality.

What a tragedy!!!

It seems he was right on track to the top rangs in this sport

But I disagree on the whole age bla bla

an adult could as well run into a oil spot or go into a corner too fast or whatever...and have a fatal crash
Motorsport is just like any other sport...if you want to be at the top,you have to start as a child and live the sport
The argument that kids can`t judge the potential dangers or are not mature enough to do the right decisions is weak.
Those that come that far, that they are being given high performance bikes or karts or even formula 3 cars are special talents and have proven over years that they have the skills and the mindset for this sport.
It`s not like they are able to race with high performance machines from day 1 on...they have to work their way up and along that way the build the right character and improve their skills beyond what 99.9% of all adults will ever even be able to glance at

Thank you - you said perfectly well what I was thinking, but way more eloquently than I ever could.

Absurd indeed. RIP Peter Lenz.

Of course, but an adult is old enough to make those choices for himself. This kid was 13 when he died, and his website shows videos of him when he was 6! At what age would his death not have been acceptable to you as the price you pay to make it to the top?

At what age were his parents supposed to stop protecting him?

The retrospective fallacy has to be acknowledged as well.

Failure to be killed is not proof of success, merely good luck. The successful few will look back on their rise, and see not talent, hard-work, and luck, but talent, hard-work, and the inevitability of their eventual triumph.

Watching this video gave me a great appreciation for what we really did lose. Even with the loss there still is a very proud father I hope.
RIP

Disagree. Kids get hurt in all kinds of sports. Are you going to ban football, gymnastics, and cheerleading as well? The kid was riding a 125, that bike he was riding in the video I posted had all of 20hp. He was a better rider than I am for sure. Accidents happen in all sports, kids get killed in all sports. It's tragic but it happens. He wasn't out there racing against adults, he was racing against other kids his own age.

Now, if you were to say he shouldn't have been racing at Indy, THAT I would agree with. The track is too fast and in too poor condition for this level of racing. Kids mostly race at small tight tracks like Grange in Apple Valley where you'd be lucky to hit 70.

I raced motocross since I was something like 12 or 13 ... and even though you're a kid, you're very aware you better avoid *ucking up. I did have a bunch of tumbles, several gnarly crashes, a couple trips to the ER. I can only remember one instance when another kid died. Bad crash in a fast sweeping downhill, didn't think much of it back then ...

And with all this being said, I feel uneasy about a 13y/o racing on a "big" track like Indy. It's weird how one side of me is "dammit, that's pushing it for a kiddo" and the other says "dumbass, you were doing the exact same thing at the same age". Well, if you swap road racing for motocross. And I wasn't fast.

Is this what getting old feels like? Damn it ... god don't tell me I'm gonna be one of those disgusting law-and-rules mongering old farts.

Anyways, RIP to the kid and thought go to the family. Freak accidents suck.
