The image below is from the same collection. I think it might be safe to say there is a lot we aren't seeing.

British owner ( really an American ) has quite a few amazing things too numerous to list. His collection is also always in flux as well so difficult to keep track. If you are still in touch with JM I believe they recently did an exchange deal for a different McLaren F1.

What's the difference between this one and the well known white one with the HDF kit that lives in NYC? Are they different whites or was one repainted. I read this was the only white one, but that can't be true.

 

Yes, articles reporting this to be the "only white F1" are simplifying the story to the point of error.

Chassis 031 was the only F1 painted in "Marlboro White". There were just two F1 road cars painted in any shade of white originally, the other one is chassis 053. Side by side this car would be a sharper, brighter white. The other car is creamier, if you will.

There are also two other white F1s today - the car you reference is chassis 014 which was originally painted yellow. The white paint was done in a refit by the factory initiated in late 2006 by the current owner. The other white F1 is chassis 072, the one with the red accents that recently found itself on its roof during the F1 Owner's Club Tour in Tuscany. That car was originally black and received its repaint by the factory in a refit initiated in mid-2011 by the car's current owner.
