Mark,

Installation is that simple. Thew will use 3M double sided tape...we have used this method for our Audi paddle extensions and it is super strong.

Does the tape hold if you push away for a change rather than just pull?

I wouldn't push on them, but we have yet to test them. Does anyone really push to shift?

We should have the first prototype set done in a couple weeks so that we can test them and give all the details.

That's the whole point of the interconnected toggle design on the MP4-12C's paddle shifters. You can actuate either shift with just one hand by pulling or pushing on the paddle, with opposite results depending on which side.

The carbon shift paddles offered by McLaren replace the existing paddles with a new one-piece full carbon design:

I am sure they have a full carbon price too.

It is a rocker and people certainly push to shift on occasion.

I think those are slip ons

Looking at the pic of the McLaren version, I think you can see the metal paddle showing in the spoke opening. So my guess is that they are slip-ons. Looks to me like they slip on from the outside. Or they could tape on from the front!

We anticipate the tape will be plenty strong. Best part is that it will be a 15 minute install that the owner can do themselves.

As for doing a 'full' carbon replacement for the mechanism, its possible. But there are some very fine adjustments on the unit that make it a Pandora’s box of a project. We feel our proposed solution, having been proved on the R8 will work great.

Whichever way, both solutions look fantastic. Do they obstruct the view of any of the gauges?

Here are a few pics of the finished product. The fit is perfect and the bond from the tape is strong enough to push and pull on the levers. These things look sweet!
