Daaamn ! 27K for a Bumper !!

looks awesome tho

texanphotography 07-25-2012 09:08 PM

looks pretty sweet, but what mother fvcking idot would pay $27k for a god damn bumper

Chris from Cali 07-25-2012 09:11 PM

Yeah, no kidding. The MP4-12C is rapidly moving from a "Some day" $200K car into "no way" $300K+ territory... Makes the SLS AMG look mighty appealing - or even a second-hand Scuderia.

The same person who might pay $16K for louvers over their front wheel arches like the ones McLaren showed at Pebble Beach last year when they unveiled the Special Operations program:

http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6198/6...2e7af1a7_z.jpg

These options are meant to be fairly exclusive and their price helps to ensure that. There will, however, be customers who prefer this look and will have no problem at all covering the extra cost.

I don't see why McLaren should be criticized for offering almost any option for the car - especially one like a more agressive front end that has been requested by many people. The cost to develop something like this and create the molds has to be amortized across what ever limited number of them they expect they can sell, which is further justification for the high cost.

They are "options" though so if you just want a more basic car closer to MSRP that is certainly still available. McLaren's attitude is all about giving customers what they want.

I'm sorry, but they could sell many more at sub 10k and probably actually recoup the costs. This isn't a Veyron.

And louvers for $16k just doesn't compute either. No wonder I can't remember seeing one with them.

jaymoney 07-25-2012 10:05 PM

I think that it is very clear that Mclaren is going to be like no other car manufacturer. They have a never say "no" policy when to comes to customers. The HS cars were sold for a rumored 400K. Then the customer resold at least 1-2 of them without any trouble. At the same time, they offer upgrades to their existing customers at no cost. It's easy to name other cars and manufacturers that may cost less but this car offers unprecedented customization and performance. If they started with a car that was stacked with carbon and crazy options at 300K, no one would question it. The fact is if you want truly spectacular performance you can buy this car for under 250K. Then if you want it loaded and completely personalized you can have that as well. There is really no other car buying experience like it.

pearlcoupeg35 07-25-2012 10:10 PM

I think its fine. Take the car at 250k.....divide by 3 and you get roughly 83,500. The price of a sick Cayman R or Bxoster Spyder. Then take the 27k for the bumper and divide by 3....you get 9k....roughly the coust of a sick TechArt Bumper for the Porsches.

So it really is relative to the cost of the car --- i see nothing wrong with the price and absolutely LOVE the look of this bumper. My main issue (as if it matters) with the MP4 was the front end - but this TOTALLY fixes it. Awesome.

Markjayw 07-25-2012 10:14 PM

Problem is this is what the car should have looked like from the start, or the HS version. These are upgrades, so what about the cost of the original bumper that won't be used, so the cost is an EXTRA $27000, way too high, let alone the vented louvers.

yep on multiple counts.

Tomfish038 07-25-2012 10:32 PM

Stop complaining. does it really matter to all the people who cant afford this car? if rich people wanna spend there money then let them why should us people who cant or will not spend the money for a car complain about it. its as simple as that. If i had the money to buy this car i probably would go all out get everything i could to make it look badass but thing is i cant so why should i complain about the price of a bumper that i cant even afford.

Alzilla 07-25-2012 10:42 PM

I think the bumper and louvers look great! While $27k and $16k is a lot for these items, in the overall cost of the car, it's not unreasonable. Plenty of people will throw up the cash to have their Macca look a little different from their neighbor's car.

Funny - I can recall seeing five in a row. ;)

As jaymoney noted - someone paid in the range of $400K a piece for each one of those cars and why shouldn't McLaren be willing to cater to the wants of the customer?

Here's another one with the louvers that isn't an HS seen recently in Top Gear magzine. This 12C was done up to match the owner's heavily customized McLaren F1 for the ultimate pairing.

http://i45.tinypic.com/e1cfh1.jpg

As for whether the 12C should have looked like this or the HS from the start - that may be a widely held opinion, but they've found buyers for well over 1,000 12Cs worldwide already with the original production bodywork.

The orange one was spotted in Monaco if that helps!

Peloton25 07-25-2012 11:52 PM

Most of them initially came to Florida except one of the white ones that was first spotted in the south of Spain IIRC. Whoever commissioned them obviously has very deep pockets and probably can take them anywhere.

It was actually Saint-Tropez according to Shmee's FB wall:

^^^

All for the same owner?

Peloton25 07-26-2012 12:59 AM

That was the original story but I won't claim to know if true.

Also, the white one in Spain was the only one in the set of 5 that wasn't configured for North America.

Just wanted to file this post from McLarenLife here. It comes from a current 12C Coupe owner whose car was fully loaded, including a few bits from MSO as well. Here he is talking about the new bumper pictured above:

Sounds like he knows what will make him happy regardless of the price. That's the way to buy a supercar!

Looks nice but not $27,000 nice IMO.

yzracer931 07-26-2012 08:25 AM

Looks nice, wish I could get my hands on one and splash a mold off it.

gmaccormack 07-26-2012 11:41 AM

Is cool a mfg is doing this giving customers a choice. It's an expensive car it's going to have expensive options.

Saw a $200 trash can today, im sure the same people would like to buy the can too.

La Artist 07-26-2012 07:48 PM

I think it helps the cars looks very much.
Im not a fan of the 12C to begin with..i think it looks like generic sports car design..as if matchbox made a supercar toy.

But at that price.. No thnx!

Sechsgang 08-02-2012 02:55 PM

I feel like at the point where one is asking for pretty special custom upgrade to their supercars from the factory arent going to nitpick on price too much. But thats just my .02. Car looks great, and I love how Mclaren is taking care of their clients!

DJ 08-02-2012 04:20 PM

You'll see these at Pebble beach.

Damon@tirerack 08-06-2012 10:34 AM

Beautiful car, but I'm sorry - this is spending money just to spend it.

PatrickHenry 08-06-2012 11:55 AM

i love reading about all the cool things to buy.

go check out what people are doing to upgrade their boats if you think this is high. ive seen windshields cost way more than this!

"i spend it like a make it" - a guy once told me.

falb 08-08-2012 07:47 PM

My understanding is that the louvers are non-functional and the bumper creates more drag....but they look sweet! You know this rarefied air runs on capitalism and giving the customer what they want is what drives demand. If I need to pay $10 USD for a beer at a baseball game I am happy to do it---I want the beer.
