I don't think it's a failure. Maybe a little bit of a let down, but not a failure. Let's face it, if there were no 458 we'd be talking about how epic the 12C is. Faster than a 911 Turbo, Noble and a Scuderia. I think what it does show is just how good the 458 is.

On another note, that Noble sounds incredible!

I agree that 95% will not see a track. But people still buy these cars based on track performance. Speed sells, whether or not you will use it. And claiming significantly faster than a 458 probably sold half those cars. All of the technology that went into it that you would like it for was implemented to make it faster, not more fun or visceral, but faster.
