Post Report: Next Maserati Quattroporte to get all-wheel drive, start-stop tech

According to our friends at Autoblog with Ferrari spending so much time and money talking up its hybrid, KERS, lighter weight and more efficient V8 plans, it's natural to find sister company Maserati not far back in tow. But before the Trident brand goes fully over to the Eco side, the 2012 Quattroporte will be taking the intermediate step of losing weight, increasing fuel economy and adding stop-start tech.

According to Maserati CEO Harald Wester the weight loss target is 15%, the mileage target a 25% improvement, both of which will be aided by smaller, lighter V6 and V8 engines and an eight-speed transmission. The target will be even more difficult to hit because the Q'Porte reportedly will be available with all-wheel drive, built on a platform to be shared among every high-end Fiat and Chrysler vehicle.

Would this then be the first Ferrari-Maserati with four wheel drive? Crazy

I can understand AWD to an extent from a market share perspective, but given they aren't a volume brand I am confused. Also this deviates from their heritage in a big way which is something they stress quite a bit...

It says available in AWD, you can still get one without... Where I live (NY) I could see this being a bonus to people.

Consider the people that live in places like the Northwest (United States).
It rains a lot (like a lot) and there are plenty of mountain passes that are crossed on a regular basis.
If you're one of the lucky ones that is capable to use one as a DD and you live in that type of environment then that AWD is going to be the first option box you check when purchasing that car.
