Green vs. Mean: Tesla Model S Drags the New BMW M5

Ezra Dyer pits the Tesla Model S against the BMW M5 in a drag race during Automobile Magazine's 2013 Automobile of the Year testing at Gingerman Raceway.

On paper the new BMW M5 should take the electric sedan to school, but that certainty isn't the case as seen in the video below. The M5 sprints to 60 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds when mated with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission according to manufacturer data, and the gang from Tesla note the "Signature Performance edition" of the new Model S will hit 60 in 4.4 seconds. So what's going on here?

Of the line the Tesla embarrasses the mighty BMW M5 here, well 2 out of 3 times anyway. The old adage of don't believe everything you read comes to mind here.

How can you call BS? They showed you a video to prove it. They aren't saying Top speed or 1/4 mile. Just 0 - 100 MPH. 400+ LB/Ft of TQ at 0 RPM can do that!

I think the Model S had the jump on the M5 and it seems the M5 driver didn't launch correctly but the fact that these two even compete is impressive for an electric car regardless of the winner. +1 for the Model S in any circumstance.
