Why not? I've seen roof racks on way worse cars then the M3, like the F40 for example. I see nothing wrong with either though. Who says you need to go offroad to have a bike rack anyway? What if he's just going to the bike trail? Or the park? Or a parking lot of a MTB area? Not everything is offroad acess only. I used to take my 350z to the skatepark all the time, just took the wheel off my bike and put it in the hatch. They make a hatch-rack for it, but I sold the car before buying on. I did the same thing with my STi.
