nvm just looked at the eBay ad ... Mine is a 4 not a 3. S54 FTW. But the proposition still stands!

Thanks but I believe he's driven one.

I also think he's worked a deal with the guy off of the auction.

I've told him to possibly look a couple years newer and haven't heard since.

If I were your friend, I would look for a S54 version I forgot what years they were made, but I think 2001-2002.

They have a subframe weakness, but you can buy a kit which is quite cheap to reinforce it. Other than that they are great cars!

Afaik the subframe has to be welded to reinforce or fix it. Generally $500-$1000. Either way, it is an awesome car and I wouldn't let the subframe deter someone from the car.

I haven't seen any subframe failure on M Roadsters. I was a problem with the E46's.

I also would recommend your friend get one with the S54 Motor. This was the motor from the E46 M3 and is one of the best engines BMW ever made.

They are great fun cars. As others have said, S54 engine is the one to go, The S52 found on the earlier models are not as powerful or special.
