BMW 1 Series M beats M3 at Hockenheim
The recent round of reviews had us euphoric about the 1-series M Coupe already, and it's getting even better. The most renowned German sports car magazine Sport Auto has published their review. The biggest news first - the 1M lapped the Hockenheim in 1:14.1. To add some perspective, the fastest time Sport Auto got for the M3 was 1:14.2 in an E92 M3 ZCP DCT. For more perspective, we've added some more Hockenheim times from Sport Auto below.

Sport Auto clocked 4.7 seconds for 0-62mph and 17.2 seconds for 0-124mph. But it's not only the measurable performance that impressed the reviewers, it's also the fun. Purely a subjective matter, but the 1M got 10 out of 10 points for driving pleasure. Sport Auto confirms the 1M being tailhappy when driven at the limit with DSC off, but - unlike the AMS review - they don't consider this a bad thing. To the contrary, it "reminds them of the old BMW times. It's good to know that not all cars are tuned in to understeer for safety reasons."

It appears that BMW hit a home run with the 1M, or as Sport Auto puts it: "The 1M is all you need in a sports car."

Very impressive! Congrats to BMW for building a special car. Sounds like the baby M has very good road holding and balance. Plus all the torque helps pull the car out of corners and rocket to the next apex or straight.

BMW M really had to make sure the 1M had ample cooling while it was being tested on the Ring. I'm looking forward to hearing from owners of the 1M who decide to track their car how the turbo N54 engine performs after being pushed all day, lap after lap. The V8 M3 has no problem performing flawlessly all day in virtually any weather condition.

How about a CSL version of this M then.

A 1 Series M CSL would be amazing. Strip out anything not necessary. Make a few post title dealer installed option (i.e. lighter seats with no airbags, rear roll bar for stiffness, plexi rear windows to keep weight balance) and you have one hell of a little car.

I predict rage and anger when I make my rounds to the m3 owners forums today.

which CSL would you guys be talking about? turning the 1m or the e9x m3 into a CSL model? id love to see it on the E92; the E46 CSL was one of the best cars BMW ever made

good for the 1m, but sad day for the m3

Meant CSL for the 1M. Not neccessarily a sad day for the M3, it's still a joy to drive and given the choice, I'd jump in the M3 first.

BMW seems to have done an outstanding job on this car and making it a true 'M'! I'm hoping that the video reviews are going to be up soon to get a full idea of how great it is.

Very impressive. I'm even contemplating getting one for a track toy. I just don't know if I can believe BMW have fixed the fuel pump issues. Our 135 went in to have that fixed last week and it has less than 10k on the odometer.
