Good luck with the install.

This is by far the most work I've seen in a long time to fit an OEM part. If this was any other part I'd call you insane. However, from what I've seen, this really is a quality setup.

I did some rollons with against a full full bolt-on Dinan tune E46 last summer from 50-200km/hr in my stock '04 CTS-V(400hp-3850lbs). I did not start to pull away until about 140km/hr but pulled quickly after that. We had a good 3 runs that day.
True, Thanks for the info Bro

Back on topic that is a sweet CF airbox setup. Gave me an idea on how to mod mine for better airflow this summer.

Thanks Bro. Im gona uses some kinda mesh screen near the flap to stop debris going into the intake and the filter.

So many people wonder what the point of the CSL Flap is and if it has any effect on power.

We decided to invest a little time and find out.

We already know that with the sport button pressed the flap opens far earlier than with the sport button off. So a simple back to back dyno test could be done with the sport button on and off to see hwo the flap effects power output under full load.

At the high rpm's in both sport and non sport throttle mode the flap opens all the way and as we can see from the results the top end power is the same.

Conclusion:

The flap being closed does hamper the full load power output through the midrange. Anything upto 10bhp and 10lb.ft torque infact. No wonder those with non working flaps complain about the car feeling slower.

Next time we'll test with the flap closed at the high rpm's aswell to see it's effect.

So....if the CSL flap stops working then there is missing power!

I believe the flap is there to accelerate the air velocity at low to mid rpms. Think of when you put your thumb on a water hose. Water will exit at a faster rate due to conservation of mass (Continuity equation explains this phenomenon (Q1=Q2 for you engineering people with Q being V X A).

Flow is basically velocity times area. So by closing the flap at lower rpms when the engine isn't sucking in air at a high rate, you reduce the area to increase air velocity. When area goes up, velocity goes, and vice versa.
In other words, a properly functioning flap should logically give you more mid range torque.

Hope that makes sense.

True, Im sure its safe to leave the flap open as most CSL owners remove the flap completely. I will try my best to mod the flap control to open and close at the right rpm but thats not very likely seeing as the only way to do it is either with a manually activated switch or by switching to CSL DME which is and might not be possible or regular M3's like mine.

I will for now stick to open flap and a make a screen to keep out the crap. I will speak to SAL @ EVOLVE about this when i get back from the States.

Dude, I've had my custom CSL intake box sitting around the house for a year now.. been meaning to get it installed, but the tune is a problem as I need to ship out my ECU to the UK (initially they had told me they'd be coming to Bahrain "soon" and would do the tune for me).

Good luck and can't wait to see how it works out!

CSL Airbox is like the most rare aftermarket part in the world. (Seems that way at least) People clamor for those things like CRAZY.

I'm amazed you found one to buy! Congrats!
