Arrow Video: M Performance Exhaust for BMW M3

New Accessory exhaust produces sharper exhaust note while reducing back-pressure

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – February 18, 2011… BMW today announced a new M Performance exhaust system specifically designed as an accessory for the BMW M3 Coupe, Sedan and Convertible. With the racetrack and the street in mind, this new exhaust system is crafted from an extremely heat-resistant and lightweight chrome-nickel alloy called Inconel®. This flow optimized exhaust system reduces exhaust backpressure and allows the M3’s 414 horsepower V8 engine to produce an even more powerful sound.

Inconel’s unique qualities allowed engineers to reduce the thickness of the tubing from 1.5mm to 0.8mm. This resulted in a weight reduction of approximately 40%, or about 20 lbs. when compared to the stock exhaust system. Inconel has also proven to be very corrosion resistant and has been used at the highest level of Motorsports.

The M Performance Exhaust includes perforated inner pipes and polished titanium tips, which are laser engraved with the M logo. It represents the ultimate in technology and sportiness, accentuating the individual character of the BMW M3. The exhaust was developed using state-of-the art CAD and FEM technology ensuring optimum fit and OEM quality.

The new exhaust may be installed at any Authorized BMW Center at a price of $4,374 plus installation. M Performance parts are warranted for the New Vehicle Limited Warranty period when the installation occurs before the first delivery of a new vehicle. If the M Performance parts installation occurs after the first delivery, the accessory will be warranted for the balance of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty period or two years and unlimited mileage from the date of installation, whichever one is greater.

I like it, don't like the price though! I know it's made of Inconel and it should fit perfect but still, can't rationalize the cost.

It still seems to low/quiet to me. I love OEM-plus options, but for the price, there needs to be some point where the noise makes me shout "Holy sh*t!"

Sounds great and I love the fact that it's a BMW Performance part; however, the price is a bit too steep for my liking. I've been searching for a lightweight exhaust system for my E92 M3, but I've been leaning more towards the Akrapovic Titanium unit. Anyone have any good recommendations?

The price will be justified by the fact you keep your warranty.

I agree from that point of view; however, my warranty is almost up anyways. I guess it could be better for the re-sale value of the car in the long run (not that I would ever sell it unless I absolutely had to) since it is an authorized BMW part.

I'm not sure how much a inconel catback is worth..the technical advantage of inconel is best used in a manifold, where you have higher thermal and mechanical stress.
If you use walls so thin the sound level would be too high and you will have to use a lot of sound deadening, so the weight advantage is lost.
I think 1mm is the limit.

We have a few products made in inconel, the 997 turbo manifold is one example, and we're thinking of using it more if we'll have a market feedback, but it's very expensive, both the metal and the manifacturing.
It's much better than titanium though, as it doesn't crack when the oxigen gets in the metal matrix at high temperatures.

Awesome video by the way!

Do titanium exhausts tend to crack? I thought they were able to handle extreme temperatures, so I assumed they are beneficial for track use in the sense that they're light and durable.
