To ESS the M3 or not?

Good call, Mike. As tempting as the instant-on shove of a supercharger sounds (speaking as a person who has owned a few such engines), something about that V8 seems to scream N/A. If it were mine, I would probably go the less-travelled route and get a 4.4L or 4.6L stroker kit. Probably less cost-efficient, but much more pure in my mind.

Oh, absolutely! A much rarer option that would truly set your M3 apart, especially in a garage like Mike's.
Thus far Dinan, RD Sport, and Brabham have released increased-displacement M3 programs, although Brabham's is ridiculously overpriced IMO.
Oops, sorry for clogging up your ESS poll, Mike!

Hello again. I just received word that a Red Supercharged Active Autowerke M3 has a full write up and cover of December 2010 BIMMER Magazine. It will be a good chance to get a 3rd party review. See if you can get yourself a copy.

Reviving this one for Mike S
There is a 4 door grey ESS M3 for sale at moment, you prob know of it...think you can get it for circa ZAR800k. Has M-sport wheels, coil overs, brembo's and Akrapovic.....went for a ride in it after the guy had completed the kit and spoken to ESS many times about altitude maps for JHB. This guy also had a GT2, think sold now. It is very very well looked after.
Much easier than doing it yourself and its stupid fast
