It's not the cost of the boat that gets you it's the said 10% of value cost of ownership per year that will bury you

Ever since I saw a show on mega yachts, one of the owner's gave a piece of advice:
"Don't own a boat... have a friend with a boat. Me? I have a lot of friends"
Like mark says, the initial purchase cost is just the beginning...

I almost bought a small boat like 6 years ago. The 55' Alexander I wanted was 1.5 million bucks. I would've parked it in front of my house but I was still informed to expect $50k-$70k a year in variables. I figured I would use it 16-20 weeks a year very limited amounts.
The Math
1.5 million out of pocket + 10 years cheap maintenance is 2 million bucks
OR Rent a 65' skippered boat for 2 weeks a year for $20k a week
It would take 50 years to get to 2 million bucks and my kids don't want to spend 2 weeks a summer on a boat anyway
