How could I miss this thread?

I L - O - V - E this boat!!

the only downside is that at this size you probably aready need to hire staff for operating/maintaining the boat
which would limit one of the best aspects of boating : privacy

for the smaller boats, like this one, does the crew have to be full time? Or can you dock it for a few weeks and only pay for the crew when you need it?

It really depends where you boat. In the US you do not NEED a crew. Most places you will be able to dock alongside a pier or t-head.
On the other hand I do not want to med-moor an 86 footer with at least one person at the windlass and watching the anchor rode and one person on each side with a fender in their hands in addition to the fenders hanging off the side. Also if you own a boat this size in Europe you most likely need the proper licenses and therefor alone many hire a captain even if the owner runs the boat himself.
