Rumormill: Toyota Already Planning More Powerful, Supercharged TRD 86

"Autocar reports that Toyota is already hard at work evaluating a high performance version of the new Toyota GT 86 sporting coupe. Chief engineer Tetsuo Tada says that not only is a supercharged GT 86 envisaged, test cars have already been made and are being evaluated by Toyota Racing Developments, the Japanese giant’s in house tuning division.

Tada-san favours the supercharger approach because it is simpler to achieve than increasing engine size and doesn’t wreck throttle response as turbocharging might. Indeed Toyota says that turbocharging along with four-wheel drive and wide tyres are what make sports cars boring to drive.

Autocar is also reporting that not only is Toyota considering a supercharged 86, but that test mules are already being evaluated by TRD."

Why? Lots of people want a simple RWD sports car in the $25k range. Most guys don't want the 'girly' MX-5 even though it's an amazing drivers car, so this should really fill a gap in the market. 200 hp is plenty in this price range, and I'm sure with Toyota and Subaru variants the tuner market will grow to be massive.

I personally think they are going to have a hit, and can't wait to see what people do with them.

And look at the LFA - knife-edge response and RWD.

Hi,

I think you'll find that's just a rendering done by someone on the net mate, not what Toyota are thinking of producing.

Also, it's got a front lip, big wheels and is lowered. I wouldn't exactly call it rice! It doesn't even have a rear spoiler!

Obviously a lot of people don't like these two cars. Bring 'em on! I just want to know how much it'll cost me!

Cheers,
Nik

I'm all for this. I don't really care for the current model going into production, but yeah it does fill a MUCH needed gap. a 200hp rwd coupe is the perfect first "sports" car in my opinion. Depending on what the final rendition and specs look like, I could see myself in either the Toyota or Subaru performance versions of this car for a cheap DD.
