Infiniti FX Sebastian Vettel version confirmed for production
Now that Sebastian Vettel has been crowned a double world champion Formula 1 driver, Infiniti has announced that the Infiniti FX Sebastian Vettel concept car will go into production.
Yes, it’s a tenuous link, but Vettel does actually drive an Infiniti FX, and with the Sebastian Vettel version (or should that be Infiniti SV?) having a 5.0-litre V8 tuned to produce 420hp, plus aerodynamic upgrades, it will actually crack 300km/h, believe it or not.
We’re told that the car came about from a conversation that Vettel had with Infiniti Chief Creative Officer Shiro Nakamura at the Geneva Motor Show. We’re not sure if it was a one-sided conversation or not, but Infiniti’s press release states that the design, engineering and aerodynamics upgrades were inspired by Vettel, not designed by him.
We're not sure about the pricing and technical details of the production version as yet - all Infiniti would say is that it will be announced at a later date.
“Doing the FX Sebastian Vettel version for Frankfurt was fun, but it’s also a kind of pilot, stated Infiniti Executive Vice President Andy Palmer. “It’s about our equivalent of (Mercedes-Benz) AMG or (BMW) M Cars. We wanted to test the organisation and see if it could cope with this type of special version. Sebastian’s FX demonstrates we are able to do low volume specials and the FX Sebastian Vettel version is one of the first that will go to market.”
Well, Mr Palmer, if that’s the case, we’d like to see some more low volume models which may carry a bit more credibility. An engine flash, a couple of bolt-ons and a fancy badge does not a special edition make.
A crossover with F1 links? Drawing a bit of a long bow there, Infiniti.
