Spied: The Toyota FT-86 (The New Celica)
The Toyota FT-86 is inching closer to production as our spy photographers have caught a prototype undergoing testing in Germany. While the car is heavily camouflaged, we can see the production model will attempt to strike a balance between the original FT-86 concept and the aggressive FT-86 II concept.
The company has been quiet on specifics, but the rear-wheel drive car will be powered by a 2.0-liter boxer engine that develops approximately 200 hp. It will be paired to a six-speed manual transmission, but a six-speed automatic will be optional. Set to be unveiled later this year, the FT-86 is likely to be called Celica and will be joined by the Scion FR-S and a yet to be named Subaru variant.

Looks like the mule lost most of the cool concept pieces. 200hp is a joke. An Altima has more power than that. I don't know how Toyota can compete with Hyundai with disappointments like this. Genesis coupe in either T4 or V6 will blow this car away.

Are they releasing multiple versions of this car under different brands? If they use the same boxer engine as the STI then I wouldn't mind one of these. 200 hp isn't great but dropping in a turbo shouldn't be too difficult.

Hi,
Lots of discussion over what motor they'll go with. We've got a complete unveil date of July 1, at the Melbourne Int'l Auto Show.
First thing I cringed at when I saw those spy photos was the tiny brakes! Like the STi wheels though.
Cheers,
Nik
