The reality is this, Hennessey sold their flagship car at a marked up price with parts on it that could eventually lead to possible engine failure. It is nice that they told the guy he could send it back (at a price I'm sure), but why offer the car in this condition in the first place? It was a way to recoup their costs on the vehicle and try to hook another customer.
I didn't see a link to the original thread. Having given it a look, this actually looks pretty bad on Hennessey's part. As Zorro said, they should have sold it for much less or upgraded the car with production parts prior to selling it. Hopefully Hennessey and the customer have already worked things out or soon will.

So the car was sold for $90k or $90k on top of sticker? Considering the demand that the GT-R had, I would have figured there would be some cut corners at $90k total package for a 1st shop tuned car.

Then why sell it for a premium? Would you let a car like this, with your company's name plastered all over it, out of your shop if it looked like that? No shame.
I mean I have no idea how much a GTR goes for, but $90k doesn't seem like much of a markup? Plus that is probably a discount from what a fully tuned 'final' product would cost from them. I don't really care about this tuner or that, but I do know that a prototype is just that. When I download a beta program, I don't get pissed when it crashes. So even though this car costs 90k, obviously the person felt that with the modifications it had, even though not 100%, that it was better than a stock GTR. I would NEVER do that, but on the other hand you can't blame the company because they claim it wasn't their final product. Now, maybe H is lying and they just did a shitty job, idk.

I can understand it's a hacked together prototype to test out different solutions ... but you don't sell those cars. You either get rid of crummy stuff for the actual production pieces or let the car sit in storage. I'm glad it's not my name on the windshield.
+1, this is the answer. Don't let go your prototype. If you want to, replace everything with final product parts. I could see them wanting to recuperate some costs, but sometimes you just got to eat those. NO major company ever releases their prototypes, it isn't worth this bad press (and there are a billion other reasons)

I just read most of the link and im left surprised. I had no idea Hennessey was so disliked. The amount of law suites was almost comical when you thank that the company is still probably taking orders to this day. Its a good think Hennessey hasnt had a customer that was firearm determined to get justice.

Definitely shouldnt have left the shop like that.. Hope this is isnt another sign of the time.. In my small scale business compared to Hennessy i would be embarrassed to put out a car like that with my name on it..

Getting mods is always a risk.

I have always tried to stick with major tuners to avoid getting ripped.

But it still happens.

It's really too bad.

Mike,

It isn't a sign of the times, Hennessey has been doing business like this for years. Even when the economy was good, he was taking money and cars with little to show for it.
