Miami Dade jury awards $8.8 million to family of woman killed in crash [The Miami Herald]
Dec. 21--A Miami-Dade County jury awarded $8.8 million to the family of a mother killed in a collision with a teenage driver -- believed to be texting -- in 2008, according to lawyers involved with the case.
Myriam del Socorro Lopez was a passenger in a car driven by her husband, travelling eastbound on Bird Road, when Luis Cruz-Govin, 17 at the time, was speeding and weaving in and out of traffic in his father's Subaru. According to the complaint filed by lawyers, Cruz-Govin slammed into Lopez's vehicle. Lopez died on the scene, and her husband Wilson Torres suffered internal injuries -- including substantial abdominal bleeding, and a large cut from his chest to his stomach from the impact.

Man awarded $7.5M after slip-and-fall at Starbucks
VISTA, Calif. -- A Vista Superior Court jury has ordered Starbucks to pay a chiropractor and his family $7.5 million after a slip-and-fall accident left him with a brain injury.
Court records show the amount aims to compensate Anthony Zaccaglin for loss of income, medical expenses and the loss of enjoyment of life, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune (Man wins $7.5 million suit against Starbucks | SignOnSanDiego.com).
In March 2008 Zaccaglin was in a Starbucks picking up his order when he slipped on a just mopped area hitting his head on the floor, according to his attorney John Gomez. A Starbucks employee had just mopped the area and a store manager testified she put out three cones warning customers of the wet floor but witnesses said they only saw one, Gomez said.

Always a good idea to review your limits of insurance and obtain quotes for higher Umbrella limits. Umbrella's are relatively inexpensive and provide asset protection in the event of an accident/claim.
