I imagine that was Porsche's plan.
I bet if all of the 918's were sold out the prototypes would be heavily disguised. But as of right now it looks like this is a marketing exercise, and it's working pretty well!

This is probably nothing but a marketing exercise, but wouldn't it be the perfect surprise if these were actually 960 test mules? Since the 918 is a hybrid, but all videos of it are with the gas engine howling, how would anyone know any different?
On the flipside, I doubt Porsche would announce/approve the 960 until they hit their target sales numbers of the 918. Until those are sold and paid for, why would they sell the car that will undermine the sales of the 918?
Sort of like building a Cayman 3.8...except the Carrera model isn't a limited run.

Hi Carrera,
Agree..my info is also that Porsche is still far away from having sold all 918 - however - this in itself is not a "disgrace"..the car isnt even in the showrooms..and this still takes one year. Yes, its also patially marketing..giving customers more and more appetizers and creating the attention for it. The design of the 918 seems to be good except for the back maybe - by the way - I realize Porsche really srewed up its design at the "back"..examples? - current Cayenne, 991, - partially the new boxster - but only limted; .panamera..hmmm..918..OK maybe but not the beauty either..
However, as already mentioned previously..the 918 will get under serious pressure when Ferrari will launch the new Enzo..and I bet you that this time the performance difference will be as big as it never was in the supercar era between Porsche and Ferrari.
F40/959: F40 certainly better in performance..but not lightyears ahead
Enzo/Carrara GT: almost even I would say
918/ new enzo: I think Enzo will be lightyears ahead..with about the same HP but 500Kg less...its clear what will happen.
But anyway..Im happy since I m not in the market for a 918 - and never will be - even if I had the money I would rather opt for a 959 and a Carrera GT..maybe also the F40.
- that way I would also loose much less..
