The Evo magazine article on the 918 stated that the exhausts will come out of the top because to exit at the back took the pipework too close to the cooling systems, seriously affecting their performance.
As has been mentioned, side exit pipes aren't allowed in some countries.

Ok, it does look good. However - Hybrid-engined w/ two electrical motors, CO2-emissions of 70g/km, and a fuel consumption of 3l/100km. Add to that an electromechanical steering, and a clutch-less PDK gearbox.
