Rennsport Reunion IV at Laguna Seca
Words and Pictures by Jason Tang
One of the largest and most comprehensive gathering of both historic, modern and rare Porsche models took place at Laguna Seca this past weekend and I was there to experience it all. With Porsches ranging from the RS Spyder, 908, 917, 962, 930, etc all in attendance for race fans, car fanatics and each and every one of us all. The sound of the engines roaring as they passed by tickling the ear drums, you had to be there to experience the sheer joy of just being there. I was there to capture everything as I made my way around the track. Where else would one be able to see a team a professionals tune a highly precise RS Spyder using the latest technologies as well as mechanics tinkering with the finicky internals of an old 356 meant to be thrown around the tight corners of turn two. Metals would groan and squeak as they pounded the well worn asphalt.
With the early morning sun raising on the very first day, I made my way to the Laguna Seca race track taking in all of the sights and the sounds of the cars roaring by made it evident that it was all about to begin.

Porsches were everywhere here, even parked within the nestled hills among other ordinary cars
The first of many warm up races had begin as classic Porsches begin roaring past each corner
Within the paddocks, cars were being adjusted, tested and prepped for track duty
With each race series divided up into "classes" ranging from the Stuttgart to the Club racing series, there were various races for every series ranging from the past to modern times. This car was raced in the Cayman series but each one of the cars were patterned after one of the many historical race cars that came before it.

A classic Porsche one of the many parked everywhere within the hills of Laguna Seca
A modern 996 GT2 was one of the many parked in the Porsche corral
One of our very own, BigE aka Eric was there with me to take it all on.
I had the opportunity to ride in a 997.2 GT3 Cup car with a professional race car driver, Cass Whitehead around the track between one of the many heats.
Waiting for the go ahead to start up the car, this car was equipped with a sequential transmission that would move quickly through the gears in order going from 1st all the way up to 6th gear in less than a blink of the eye

I happened to look over just as two cars were coming around the bottom of the corkscrew and managed to capture them both spinning out together with one another! Very fortunate that neither one hit the other nor did any of the other cars coming through. The 996 was able to get back on the track but the 993 was not quite so fortunate.
