Refurbishing 3-pc wheels?

The OZ Superlegeras on the RT12 have started to leak after 5 years.

They've never been thru any bad potholes, so no cracks or dents, but it appears that the seal between the wheel pieces has failed. First saw telltale signs of this when after washing the car, there would be traces of a tar-like substance oozing out from behind the wheels.

I understand its not unheard of, and it happens in certain conditions; maybe something to do with heat plus very hard water used for washings, or whatever. The wheels still hold air, but over a couple of days, the pressure will drop to something like 25 psi, so definitely not good or safe.

The guys at TyreRack can refurbish the wheels, and I was all set to send them out for the work. But getting them back in thru customs is going to be a royal PITA. Long story short, i'm going to get charged easily $2-3k just to get my 5 year old wheels back into the Philippines. Don't ask, that's just the way it works around here

A friend of mine produces OE wheels for Toyota, Mitsubishi and others locally, and also has a line of performance wheels for export. His facility can easily do the refurbishing, as he can source the single-use titanium bolts directly from OZ's supplier. But without the precise torque specifications, he can't do the job.

OZ is understandably not going to be giving out those specs.

Thoughts? Just a bitter pill to swallow to have to pay so much to refurbish the wheels, because of braindead customs regulations.

Do not think it will be an issue getting the torque specs...Ask OZ, or just ask tirerack. Im sure they are willing to help.

For whatever its worth, I had a leak on one of my Fikses and it cost just over 200$ to reseal the wheel, locally. They got the torque specs from Fikse directly.

Find a good wheel guy who knows 3-piece wheels, or find a race shop, they usually have a good deal of experience rebuilding them.

Toque spec's should be fairly universal... we always aim for 27ft/lbs on our 3-piece, but we do use stainless or titanium fasteners. If your going to use nickle (which it doesn't sound like) then I don't know what the specs would be.

That being said, we don't make OZ wheels, I can't speak for their assembly processes/spec's so take my info with a grain of salt. Just thought it might get you in the ballpark on the specs.
