someone on rennlist recently asked whats the downside to a CGT, here was my response :

i'll try to take ur questions seriously....
The CGT is my dream car before and after i got it for Xmas last year.

1. its a race car that should go around race tracks and mountains with a close loop so u never have to stop or get out.

2. once u stop, u need not and CAN NOT apply gas to let the clutch out and go, its a slow method to go off the line and the clutch is 3 times heavier than a GT2. Not that bad, but takes 3 days getting used to, but u will still stall once in a while, when u let the clutch out too quick. Remember, never gas!

3. its too low to go anywhere, unless u install a 4 wheel lift kit from KW like i did.

4. still the jarring ride in the city with anything less than a smooth mirror like road makes it a PITA.

5. getting in and out is worse than any of my fcars.

6. i can drive any of my fcars faster, that includes the 612. they are also easier to reach limits.

7. u'll always be too scared to go anywhere near its limits on the streets, which might be good for this beautiful car, but might be a little frustrating to drive when u wanna go fast like the fcar in front of u.

8. u wont want it to leave ur sight.

9. clutch and windshield replacements are $10K+, parts wont be cheap. But normal oil changes and routine service are fairly cheap like GT2s.

10. need ur 100% concentration when u go out, not a blvd crusier.

i can think of lots more "downsides".

but this is by far my most beautiful car with the best things put together and one of the most challenging and rewarding to drive, period.

i think only the pagani cinques bring better total impact to me. no fcar so far compares. not even the enzo with its antique F1 shift times now, my 458 shifts makes the enzo feel like a dinosaur.
but my CGT dont get intimidated by technology, its timeless.....

Please tell me you don't have a Pagani Zonda and a Carrera GT, I would just die. And thank you for sharing all this information with us. I think you perfectly described the Carrera GT - timeless. It will always be a great because it does not use technology that will be replaced, a driver, three pedals and a steering wheel.

please dont die, i wish i have a zinque convertible, or any pagani for that matter. its my dream car.

i think porsche did manuals on their GTs on purpose so it really doesnt have to compete directly with the likes of GTRs or modern ferraris with double clutch systems, they use their turbo S for that.

so they can get away with having slower nurburing lap times while emphasizing on driver involvement(or excuse), because if a CGT, GT2, or GT3 had an F1 or DCS tranny, it will cut 30 seconds off easy from the lap times now, because 0.2-0.5 seconds X 100s of shifts in one lap around the ring = 30 to 40 seconds!!!

im sure thats porsche's excuse for slower nurbering times.
we can love manuals all we want, but it really is a PITA and sometimes dangerous compared to these new DCSs.
i tried baizaing into corners and downshifting without heel and toe, and ferrari owners have no idea why my face was so white when i got out of the car.

I think the problem is that you have driven an automatic for too long. If you feel sick downshifting a manual car going fast i think you will be better off with the automatic cars.

And what Porsche are slower than f458 around nurburgring again? CGT is faster GT2RS is faster GT3 is faster. You just need to know how to shift....

i can learn to shift for another 20 years, double clutch will still be faster and more efficient.

John, I agree with you on the whole Porsche vs Ferrari and Manual vs Paddle shift argument. By the way, have you seen a race between the Turbo S and 458 Italia? Overall, I think people are too thick headed when it comes to the whole manual vs double-clutch debate. I love both and when I have more cars (first I need more money...), I'm sure I'll own both.
