Why do I think the next Audi R8 and the Porsche 961 will share most all of its components????

Finally!

Porsche's CEO Matthias Müller has finally confirmed that a new mid-engine supercar is on the way.

Having been a long time rumor, this new model has been in talks of being called the 961. Power is thought to come from the 918's new V8 but turbocharged producing 600bhp. In combination with lightweight carbon and aluminum body and structure, it could give the car a 0-60mph time around 3 seconds and top speed of 220mph.

The new coupe will fall between the GT2 and 918 Spyder. It will be direct competition to the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta and Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4. Pricing is thought to be around €300,000 ($392,126 US) and €400,000 ($522,835 US).It is believed to reach the market in 2014.

The haze around the mid-engined Porsche supercar being bred to fill the space between the 911 and 918 Spyder is clearing. A few months ago, combined intel from Automobile and Car was that the 960, a challenger to the Ferrari 458, would either be a coupe or a "four-door coupe" powered by a twin-turbo flat-six and priced "on the creepy side of 200,000 euro." Auto Express has just reported that the new car is "set to be called the 961" and cost in the area of 250,000 pounds, reflecting a lower price than was supposed last year.

Exotic technology runs downhill and Auto Express suggests the 961 will be a heavy study from the 918's chapbook, utilizing a monocoque chassis from the same CFRP materials and the 918's 4.6-liter V8. The deep haze returns again in the predictions of how those details will come together, though. Theorized output is 570 horsepower, which is the horsepower number of the engine in the 918 but less than the 620 hp in the current 911 GT2 RS, the 961 going without the electric motors of its hybrid brother. The sprint from naught to 60 miles per hour is pegged at just above three seconds, which would put it in the same bracket as the 918 and nearly a second faster than the GT2 RS.

We await more word from The Oracle to know where the 961 will get its looks from – the 911 or 918 side of the family.

Porsche 961 Confirmed

Porsche 961 confirmed | Auto Express

Porsche has given its Ferrari 458 Italia beater the green light, and it's set to be called the 961.

Porsche CEO Matthias Muller has finally confirmed that the company is working on a rival for the Ferrari 458 Italia – as Auto Express reported in May last year.

Muller wants to bridge the gap between performance models such as the 911 GT2 RS and the upcoming £672,000 918 Spyder hybrid supercar. The perfect car to slot into that space is a mid-engined supercar that Muller envisages will cost around £250,000.

Porsche hasn’t confirmed a name for the newcomer, but rumours suggest it could be badged 961. It will borrow technology from the 918 Spyder, including a lightweight carbon fibre-reinforced plastic monocoque chassis.

Our exclusive image reveals a look inspired by the 918 Spyder and the Panamera Sport Turismo concept that made its debut at the recent Paris Motor Show.

Power is likely to come from the 4.6-litre V8 engine used in the 918 Spyder. Expect around 570bhp and a 0-62mph time of just over three seconds – figures to match those of the 458 Italia and McLaren 12C.

The new supercar forms part of Porsche’s plans to sell 200,000 cars a year in 2018, but the majority of those sales will come from high-volume models such as the Macan small SUV and the next-generation Cayenne and Panamera families.

Thanks for the heads-up but I'm wondering why it's not in the GT forum where it belongs....
