Finally got it.
First drive was underwhelming as I had to pick it up on the street from the trucker and drove 5 mins home on narrow roads in traffic.
Second drive was much better as I drove in the canyons and the car actually had to turn and brake.
Third time, I discovered the Sport button, and the car was transformed. Loved the exhaust sound. Reminded me of my 2007 RS, but this one I do not have to unplug the vacuum hose. It is louder from start. Power is definitely very noticeable from my modified 997.2 (exhaust, plenum, filter, forged wheels), and I haven't even revved it over 5 yet. I revved it to 4500 and started giggling uncontrollably.
Comparison: The 458 is quicker anywhere and everywhere, shifts faster and smoother, will most probably post better lap times by anyone (especially an average driver), turns head more, and much more comfortable. The RS is much more "fun" to drive because of the involvement (clutch and stick, steering feel, compact size, etc). The immediacy of its responses to driver inputs (throttle response, braking, steering, etc) is what sets it apart from the 458, and from pretty much anything else you can buy for the street.
Summary: The 458 is a great car to own, to look at, and to drive DD, while the 4.0 is the car I would want to take out for a drive early in the morning or late at night just for the hell of driving, with no destination needed.

Did anyone else notice that the 4.0 turned the SAME numbers as the GT3 RS 3.8 ?
0-100 mph = 8.0 sec for both 3.8 & 4.0
1/4 mile = 11.8 sec both cars
1/4 mile speed = 122.2 4.0, 122.6 3.8
Even the write-up said speed and handling/grip were the same
Hope to see more tests (GT Porsche is usually good at side-by-side comparisons) as well as owner reports (and maybe a video drag race ).

Also surprising is the 3.6s to 60mph...how reliable is this publication?
