It's the inertial flywheel for the electric motors that help the car make north of 700HP. When the car brakes, it spools up to 36,000 rpm's converting its energy to drive the electric motors for additional power and torque.

Any street version of this beast obviously won't have such an inviting passenger.

I'd risk sitting on that 36k rpm flywheel if it got me a lap around the Nordschleife with Mr. Rohrl! The new roof on the RSR looks almost exactly like the 917's roof!
