Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid Shines in the Wet

There were long faces in the pits during Petit Le Mans testing today at Road Atlanta because on-and-off rain showers drenched the 2.54-mile racing surface, but there were nothing, but smiles in the Porsche Motorsport pits.

The factory team, in the U.S. preparing a race car for the first time in the U.S. since 1998, has tested and raced the car in Germany earlier in the year, but always in dry conditions, and Dr. Daniel Armbruster, Manager, Motorsport Development – Systems for Porsche Motorsport, welcomes the chance to get performance data in the wet, and thinks the slippery conditions will only help the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid.

“With the four-wheel-drive characteristics and additional torque vectoring provided by the two electric motors on the front axle, it gives us good traction in rainy conditions,” he said.

Former Porsche factory driver Mike Rockenfeller, on loan to Porsche this weekend from the Audi factory, agrees, and said his stint in the rain this morning gave him a glimpse of what the car can do in the rain.

“It’s great to be back in a Porsche 911 race car and be reminded of the traction you get as a driver, but the added four-wheel-drive and torque of the Hybrid system will be a big advantage in the wet. But we are still working on the dry track set-up for the car as well, so I hope we can get some dry laps in today as well,” said Rockenfeller, who is trying to become the first driver in racing history to win the 24 Hours of Daytona, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and Petit Le Mans – all in the same year.

Dr. Armbruster also noted that track configuration at Road Atlanta really enhances the Hybrid strengths.

“For our Hybrid system, Atlanta is a very fine track, because you have uphill/downhill and lots of curves, so you can drive through a corner and store energy, and then accelerate with the power up the hill. We have adapter the software for the characteristics of the track, and we got in lots of testing yesterday, so we are making even more adjustments after we received driver input from Bernhard and Rockenfeller. When the system is optimized, it gives us both additional performance and reduced fuel consumption,” said Armbruster.

The Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid, which demonstrated the potential of its groundbreaking technology over 22 hours and 15 minutes at this year’s Nürburgring 24 hour race and led the overall classification for more than eight hours, exemplifies the philosophy of “Porsche Intelligent Performance”. Under braking, the 911 GT3 R Hybrid converts kinetic energy into electrical energy and stores it in a flywheel. During acceleration, this energy is automatically delivered to the front wheels, supporting the combustion engine. This leads to a reduction in fuel consumption and increases the cruising range. Moreover, drivers can manually utilize the
stored energy with a boost-paddle on the steering wheel for overtaking.

Other Porsche race cars participating in testing yesterday and today at Road Atlanta include both Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 RSRs, the Team Falken Tire Porsche 911 GT3 RSR, and many of the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars running in the ALMS GT Challenge Class. The Patron GT3 Challenge by Yokohama field will take to the track for the first time on Tuesday, with the ALMS cars returning to testing on Wednesday afternoon before their first official practice on Thursday.

The race will be telecast in its entirety by SPEED TV on Saturday, October 2, starting at 11:00 AM Eastern Time (the green flag drops at 11:15 AM EDT and will conclude when the competitors finish 1,000 miles – approx. 9:30 PM based on past events – or ten hours, whichever comes first. Live radio coverage starting at 10:00 AM will also be available American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patron 2010 as well as Sirius Channel 127 and XM Channel 242. The ALMS web site link above also has live timing and scoring, plus press notes for all on-track sessions.

I won't be surprised at all if they beat all of the GT2 cars. You could put this team of drivers in a Boxster and they'd still win! They are some amazing drivers.

I am really exited to see this race on the week end. I was just cheking the timing from yesterdays test.

This car is in its own category (GTH) and posted a Fastest Lap in 1:24.06

That is 1.6 sec faster than the fastest GTC car ( a Porsche GT3 Cup).

But it was .6 sec slower than the #33 Jaguar XKRS that is the slowest of the GT2 cars.
The fastest Porsche GT3 RSR #45 porsted a 1:21.32 so there is a 2.7 sec gap between these 2 cars.

I really want to see how the hybrid part will take part in the efficiency in fuel consumption in the long run so that will be fun to see. They did a great job in the 24 hr Nurburgring race until it broke but hopefully this weekend it will be a different story.

PS. The fastest car in the GT2 Category is #62 Ferrari F430

Update:

The Gt3 Hybrid shaved almost 2 seconds pushing it to the middle pack with the GT2 category. Now the things get more interesting. I think it was raining today so lets see the qualifier tomorrow. I believe that there will be a video stream available.
