Shark Werks 3.9 liter engine conversion for the 997 GT3 -First impressions
#62
I see it has been awhile since I have given my teamspeed friends an update on the SW3.9 conversion! I am still having a love affair with motor! I believe my last update I had just turned 16,000 miles on the 3.9 and as of today I am knocking on the door of 28,000 miles with absolutely no problems! I have done just the standard maintenance, a couple sparkplug changes, and a new MAF sensor at about 50,000 and continue to change the oil every 3-4K miles. I have also switched to Mobile1 0-50 race oil for the last couple of oil changes.
Since the last TS report I have installed a new guards LSD, which is huge as I have been diving around with an open diff for nearly 30,000 miles. I encourage anyone who suspects their LSD is not working properly to send it off to matt for a rebuild. I became so accustom to driving with an open diff that I had forgotten what it was like to actually be able to get the power down and not be sideways through every corner. The new Brembo’s are fantastic, particularly in combination with the fresh LSD, as are the Bilstein B-16’s. I now have over 40,000 miles on my RSS suspension pieces and they are performing flawlessly and are as tight as new.
I have also switched to the new Michelin SS’s since my last post here. I am currently on my third set of rears and my second set fronts; I got an incredible 7000 miles out of my first set of rears. Although I got caught out on a road trip and corded the first set dangerously so before reaching a destination where I could change them out. The second set of rears I changed out at about 5200 miles, which was about all I wanted to drive on them and I did manage almost 12,200 on the original fronts, so I am pretty happy with them for longevity but I do miss the MPSC’s for the extra grip. But I must add that for the price the SS’s are a good value, they just don’t come close to having the grip of the MPSC’s but I consider the adequate. I think next time around I may try a set of the R888’s.
So to reiterate I am enjoying the 3.9 immensely and it still puts a huge smile on my face every time I turn the key, especially when it’s topped off with a tank of 100 octane!

Well it appears as if my plans to reach 30,000 miles on my 3.9 this winter have come to an abrupt end. Back in August I suffered a torn rotator cuff while Mtbiking on one of my favorite single-track trails up in Mendocino. Having suffered the same injury on the opposite shoulder some 15 years ago I instantly knew that I was up against surgery and at least 4-5 month rehab. After a trip to my orthopedic surgeon I asked if he could give me an injection of cortisone/steroids and postpone the surgery until November so I could enjoy the fall months with some more mtbike riding and driving. Reluctantly he agreed and we scheduled the surgery for early November. The injection worked as planned and I managed to get some good time on the loop and ride another 400 miles on my local trails. October is always a fantastic month for both driving and riding here on the north coast.
Everything was going as planned until last Saturday when I was out on a nice 24 mile ride with some friends and ended having a hard crash about 1000 yards from another crash I had last September, same section of downhill and same bike. At my age you think I would have learned, but no such luck! I was much luckier this year, last year I had a concussion and suffered headaches for almost six months and left me pretty bloodied up, broke two back teeth, a broken helmet a couple more fractured ribs and put me out of commission for about a month. This time around the worse I received was a broken collar bone, on the same shoulder, and two fractured ribs. So another trip back to my surgeon, who has been patching me up for the last 15 years, who needlessly to say wasn’t very happy with me. Anyway, the bottom line is he has now put me on mtbike restriction and driving restriction until my surgery next month. He says he has to have a stable shoulder before performing the rotator surgery and is hoping that the collar bone will heal itself in the next couple weeks. What this means is that now I’m looking at 5-6 month of not driving my 3.9 or riding. I am totally bummed as I don’t think I have ever gone more than two weeks without driving my car or riding, other than after last years crash.
I may just have to have Alex come up and get my car for safe keeping and to keep it exercised properly. I hate seeing these cars not driven on a regular basis.

Sorry to read about another injury! Get well as soon as you can.
Have Alex get her ready for spring in the meanwhile.
Riding is much to dangerous! I quite biking as it was cutting into my ability to go to track days and the gym because of injuries. Less biking, more driving 3.9 :-) better for your health.
