With all due respect, that no reason to destroy hours of work that who built the body, So the owner wanted to have have a 300SL, Not everyone can afford an original.

So if somebody makes a replica of the Aventador or f430, those need ot be destroyed too. Even the GT40 has been replicated and that car has heritage as does the Stingray.

Like I said he/she ain't hurting anyone by wanting to be able to drive a "classic"

Bullshit. It won a LM class overall in 52' and a few land speed records after modification a little bit later.

Also individuals are allowed to build replica's of any car they want. When you start to sell kits or reference the originals is when things really get interesting. Which is what happened here.

I could build the exact same car in my garage and as long as I presented it as my home built car there really is not much they can do.

Heck the molds for the gullwing have been splashed so many times I know of two with-in 300 miles of my house.

I think there is a misunderstanding That kit makers are trying to pass these cars as genuine. This is by and large not the case.

However, I totally understand owners supporting this because it does affect how many people show up to auction and what they pay.

Interesting story. My dad had an opportunity a while ago (10 yrs?) when we were at the Historics. A guy was selling a BEAUTIFUL replica of the gullwing, down to the tilting steering wheel, luggage straps, etc. It used the current (at the time) E320 V6 and transmission, so maintenance would've been a breeze. IIRC, the guy was asking $100K for turnkey. When my dad looked into again a few years later, the cars were selling for double that. Of course, now real gullwings go over the $1 million mark...

gmaccormack is an unknown quantity at this point
The whole argument that the real cars are too expensive is stupid. Yes they are expensive and if you cant afford one buy a model. Don't buy a fiberglass copy. Why is it so hard to understand, making a copy is akin to forgery. Making excuses that is been your favorite car forever and you wouldn't be able to have one unless its a kit car is a clear sign that you shouldn't have one. I hate that when I see a cobra or any other commonly copied car I automatically think it's a kitcar. All replicas should be destroyed.

@gmaccormack, I can see where you coming from and you have a point, just true not everyone can afford a sl500, but if he/she is a Mercedes fan and would like to drive a SL even though its not a true SL then why not. Who are they really hurting. not Like Mercedes will be losing money over it. And if who ever buys a SL replica and tries to pass it off as an original at the Barrett Jackson auction then he'll be the fool since he doesn't have the paper work to show it's authentic.
