Down & Dirty - Offroad with the G-Class
"Being a big fan of racetracks and the accompanying speed, off-roading is quite the opposite in terms of velocity. Nevertheless I was keen to find out if the fun would decline proportionally with each km/h that I drove slower. So I grabbed a G-Class, that monument of a car, and drove down to Profen near Leipzig to get down and dirty. A new world in terms of driving and handling has opened to me and being dirty has become a welcome second nature.
Driving off-road adds completely new skills to a driver’s portfolio. Although it is mostly much slower than other types of driving, I found myself being even more attentive and concentrated. The main reason is that whilst off-road, one can make so many mistakes over a distance of a mere meter. In fact, sometimes even centimeters decide whether you are stuck or perhaps even landing on the side. With the right vehicles this fortunately happens very seldom, and the G-Class is one of them. With its square lines and nearly fully upright windshield, it may appear somewhat anachronistic yet even after over 35 years of production it is still a king of the off-road.
