SoCal is an unknown quantity at this point
I am really thinking about dumping the 996 C4S and getting a 2008 M3 sedan, or a 335i sedan. I still want something that is fast and handles well, but I need more room than the Porsche is allowing. Maybe I should just buy a truck and keep the Porsche... Hmm?

I recommend the M3 sedan. Get the ones without sunroof, those will be worth premiums in a few yeras. E46 M3's without sunroof commands a premium nowadays.

We passed because we need more room and the E39 chassis has the perfect amount of rear seat space for baby scud.

I love the 3-series... My first car was a 325ci and I've had 2 since then and they are really the ideal car imo. Amazing styling, performance and driveability all wrapped up in one beautiful package of sheet metal. I'd like to one day have a 335is, the perfect medium between the M3 and a 335 coupe!!

Get the truck. You should be able to find a '05-'08 Silverado in the neighborhood of $15k or less these days.
