BMW 5 Series GT Crossover to replace 5 Series Wagon
#1
In an interview with Inside Line, BMW suggested the BMW 5-Series Wagon may be on its way out in the States. The vehicle could essentially be replaced by the 5er GT crossover introduced in Geneva earlier this year.
Stateside, the 5-Series wagon has only sold about 400 units this year, and BMW needs a higher-volume seller for this segment. The car is typically outsold in the U.S. by the very niche-focused BMW M5, while the 540i wagon was consistently beaten by the BMW Z8.
BMW hopes to sell up to 8,000 units of the BMW 5-Series GT every year, worldwide. Shame as the Wagon pictured below is sooooo much nicer the 5GT.

Never understood why noone buys wagons here. The 5-series wagon had more cargo space than the X5 and drove soooo much better. Better fuel economy (I'm assuming) and better handling as well. I can't grasp why anyone would choose a soft-roader over that thing.
I'd have a wagon if I didn't need a stupid pickup to haul the motorcycles around, and possibly even with that if CA didn't have split speed limits for trailers.

thats my dd right there baby... would get rid of everything before i ditch my 5series break. when i'm looking forward when driving (which is a good % of the time) I don't really notice the the extra space where the trunk (boot in english) would usually be. anyone buying the saloon is a suuuucker. simply no down side to having extra space... and if you think a saloon is cooler.... really!!!!
(neither is cool... there is your answer).

Estate wagons tend to have a bad wrap these days in the states. After the debut of SUVs and now the crossovers, wagons are looked upon as antiquated or old-fashioned styled vehicles. My wife who grew up with nothing but wagons in the '60s and '70s wants nothing to do with them even if it were an M5. My co-worker commented the other day on a certain crossover that she didn't like because it looked too much like a wagon. They've become stigmatized. I don't think it's stupidity, just style over substance.

The GT is just so gross by comparison. I've always been a big fan of wagons. I just wish the option existed here in the US to get a 3 or 5-series wagon with a manual trans. That'd be perfect for me.
Although it's not much to brag about, my first car was a Toyota Camry wagon and I had an absolute blast hauling friends and stuff all over the place.
