It does have explanations but it has much more emphasis on how to repair. If you just want a book on how a car works, that may not be the best thing. There are a lot of resources online you can read. HowStuffworks.com might be a good place to start.

It's a book. It is kind of similar to the Auto Repair for Dummies book in the sense that it emphasizes repair over explanation, but there are explanations for each part it talks about. Could be a helpful supplement.

I have a few recommendations, but they are expensive and only for someone trying to learn the trade in depth. They are books I used for schooling and they are thick.
