acura tsx or tl used, the maintenance prices will be much cheaper than the german rivals.

Depends on where you live. If you live somewhere that has winters, the GTI is hard to beat. If you live somewhere sunny year-round, then an S2000 is hard to beat. If you need the "safe" choice, then any Civic/Accord/TSX/etc. works. I'd be bored to death though...

Evo/STi would both be solid choices that work well regardless of climate/locations.

I dont know how much practicality you need but, the txs and tl are kind of boring. A foor door GTI would also be pretty darn practical.

Problems with Evo/STI under $20K are A) finding one under $20K, B) finding one unmodded, and C) finding one. They are such popular cars, they don't depreciate much and not too many used ones (esp. at that price) floating around. I loved my Evo.

Honestly I'd probably end up with something more like a used S4 or just an A4. You get AWD, decent fun (especially with the S4) and legendary German reliability.
