I barely see the point of SUV's period, but with a child now, I can see its miniscule utility. But what exactly is the point of the small/midsized segment? To make an almost completely worthless vehicle utterly and undeniably worthless?
If she must have an SUV, get a full sized now. RR Sport seems to be the rage with all the OC housewives I've seen so far.

OC housewives, I see that on TV, but broad strokes are a bit reckless here. We have snow, roads litered with wet leaves, big pets to carry around, etc.. out in Virginia.
We plan to have our first child in a year. I've seen my idiot friends who try to cram their kids in the back of M3 sedans and 5 series cars, having the extra headroom of a suv and the added trunk space for strollers, and all kinds of crap that is involved with kid raising makes perfect sense for me.
We also have a big dog that we'd love to take with us when we go out. We don't carry little doll sized dolls like the OC housewives you live amongst.
She prefers a larger vehicle than a normal sedan for perceived safety. She also likes the perspective being a little higher up than a normal car.
We actually get snow on the east coast, so awd is important to have. Our driveway is a long 1/4 hilly stretch (again something you guys probably don't have on the west coast) that gets dicey with wintry weather.
And no, getting a full sized seems pointless now. Why need third row seating unless multiple kids are in play?
So what did you buy your wife?

My three year old is front facing in a Sunshine kids carseat, and my 6 month old is in a Maxi Cosi convertible. One on the left, and one on the right. Occasionally, when we have to pick up the MIL, the mrs will sit in between the kids, not the most comfortable, but any non tubby wife should be able to do it for a short trip no problem.
My MIL had a 328Xi back when I first got married and lived in middle of nowhere MA where they don't plow stuff very well. The Xi didn't do too hot until I insisted that she had snow tires put on. Snow tires matter more in winter than just AWD. After that, getting around in middle of nowhere MA was not a problem for her in her AWD car that before had issues because of the no season tires.

I saw in another post about you getting a cts-v wagon, is that going to be a utility type vehicle for you guys?
I wouldn't mind a fast wagon either, might have to go take a look.

We have the Stokke Xplory stroller, and with that huge thing in the M3 sedan, we can still put a few flats of Pallergrino soda, one boxes of Kirkland baby wipes (learn it, you will need it), one big ole thing of paper towels from Costco, one flat of Mexican coke, and one big ole box of Kirkland diapers. They fit in the M3 sedan trunk just fine. It's tight, but they fit.

No argument with the perspective, but know that with that higher center of gravity you do sacrifice handling. And our philosophy is that it's better to get out of trouble with superior handling than to survive the trouble with a bigger and ill handling truck.

I get you on the fitting things in tight places, but trust me, that all goes out the window when you have a canine needing space.
The only non suv I could see that would work would be a wagon variant, with some extra space in the back. I saw you mentioned checking out a cts-v, does that come with AWD?

Oh, and you have to teach my cousin how to make efficient use of space, he's got a 550i and with a 3 and 4 year old, he swears he can't get all the crap he needs in and bitches about it all the time LOL.

And me being tall, I ordered the car without sunroof for the extra headroom, and let's face it, I just don't trust GM with a non leaky sunroof.
We also got the 6speed because well, it would be a crying shame and a waste of 560HP to mate that engine to a slushie.

Honda Pilot. My wife drove everything including Acura, Lexus, Toyota, Ford, Range Rover and hands down loved the feel of the Pilot, the way it drives, visibility, maneuverability, etc. It's not the fanciest car in the world, but she feels "safe" driving it, and that's what was most important to her in making the decision.

Before we had kids my wife and I had only a 1988 325is and a 2003 GT2. So we learned how to use spaces efficiently.
