What kind of car is this?
Hello everyone,
I was in Dresden two weeks ago and I spotted this car in front of the Hilton hotel there. I honestly can't identify it. There were no logos but a model number on the front hood. Sadly I forgot the numbers, but from the picture I took, I can make it out as:
RS xxxx( four unkown characters ) - some possibilities that I can make out from the blurred zoomed-in picture are: RS R320, RS R200, RS 1200, or RS 1300. But again that's just how it looks to me. Underneath the RS xxxx, there may be a word or name, but again I can't make it out and I can't remember it for the life of me.
Thanks in advance.

Okay, the picture in full-rez in about 3.5megs. How would I be able to post that without it being reduced in size and quality?
Well, through photobucket, I posted a 1MB version of this photo, its decently higher res. but I am unsure how do to full.
here is the link so it doesn't take up too much bandwidth and space:

It's a Melkus RS1000!!!
Only 101 cars were built in a factory in Dresden between 1969-1979. Most of them had a 992 cc 2-stroke 3-cylinder engine producing around 88 bhp but there was a 1200 cc version.

I started by searching on Google images, typing in the names of cars I thought it might be similar to (in this case: Marcos, Alpine, Renault, Panther, etc). When I couldn't find it using that method, I looked through my collection of books that contain names and pictures of all sorts of weird cars. After paging through several hundred pages and coming up empty handed, I went back and looked at the picture you posted and started analyzing the various styling cues again to see if I could pick up who designed it or at least what part of the world it was designed in. When I got to the door handle, I noticed that it was probably for a gullwing style door because of its low position on the door. I did a quick search on Wikipedia at that point for "list of cars with gullwing doors" and found a list containing both production and concept cars produced with gullwing doors and organized by production years. I took a wild guess that this car was built in the 1960's or very early 1970's so that helped narrow it down to the Melkus, and when I saw the model name was RS 1000, I knew I was on the right track. For confirmation, I typed Melkus RS1000 back into Google images to see if it was indeed the right car.
