For just a simple desktop application I would go with these. Picked a pair up for myself last winter and have been enjoying them since.

Okay, it turns out he does need a power source, which means a Tuner that has a Ipod hook up and can recieve a laptop input? Is that right?

He needs an integrated amplifier, which combines a preamp (the inputs) and an amp (the powered output) into one box. If he wants a radio too, the radio would be a "tuner," and you could combine all three of those into one box by buying a receiver.

Exactly. So I'm thinking now I'm going to buy him a 'system'. Man, I'm so out of the loop with this sh*t.....

If you want a HTIB (home theater in a box) similar to what you posted, I would go for one of the Onkyo setups (Onkyo Home Theater Systems at JR.com). They make a pretty solid system for the money, with a more traditional type of receiver (no built-in DVD players and such). I had one in college and recommended them to a few friends that were happy with their systems as well.

I would go with a Logitech 2.1 system, it's not too crazy and sounds good. The 2.1 systems come with a small subwoofer, so it will give him a new depth to his sounds...
