Calling Gaming PC Geeks... Advice on a new Rig...
#11
I might take the plunge on the 470 as well... hadn't considered the DX11 issues.
How important is getting "good" memory? I was spending more for the OCZ stuff because i had used it before and it was great for overclocking. I don't plan on having to OC this rig so does any bargain basement DDR3 suffice these days?
I'll reconsider the PSU and get something a bit more well known. If in the future I do go SLI whats the minimum wattage I need? 600? 700?

I know that the Nvidia cards require a lot of power, so you may want to research the wattage needed for sli.
Also, newegg memorial day sale.

Not sure how particular you are about computers, but I built my own from the following website and I am really happy with it.
iBUYPOWER: High Performance Custom Gaming Computers and Notebooks
You can basically build it exactly the way you want and I thought their prices were pretty reasonable.

I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure I've seen tests where they compared different RAM memory types and overclocking and the differences in performance were negligible.

Gents just wanted to stop by and say thanks for your help in guiding me through this and getting me caught up. Especially for that Newegg link! I ended up being able to get a better Mobo (1366) & a the 6GB kit for a substantial savings and a nice discount on a i7-920 for less than my i5-750 setup was going to cost me. Also ended up getting a nicer ATI card. Just wanted something with DX11 functionality and the Nvidias were all too pricey and power hungry.
Sooooo... the final specs were:
GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R &
G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 – 300.00 (Newegg)
HIS H585FN1GD Radeon HD 5850 – 290.00 (Newegg)
hec X-Power Pro 600W– 45.00 (Newegg)
NZXT GAMMA Classic Series GAMA-001BK Case – 30.00 (Newegg)
Sony Optiarc Black 24X DVD+RW – 22.00 (Newegg)
2 Hanns G 23” 1080p Monitors – 360.00 (Newegg)
Intel Core i7-920 – 214.98 (eWiz)
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus – 29.99 (Amazon)
Artic Silver 5 Thermal Compound – 8.99 (Amazon) 38.98
Seagate 500GB 7200RPM 32MB Buffer Serial ATA SATA II 3GBS & 1 SATA Cable – 50.88 (3bTech)
Total (Sans Monitors): 997.76
w/2 Monitors: Grand Total: 1357.76
Frankly i'm stoked for it to get here. I think its a hell of a lot of machine for under a grand.
Thanks again!

just to mention... i just spec'ed out almost identical builds on ibuypower and alienware (ibuypower even had exact mobo/processor/gpu/ etc. I have) and it looks like i've saved substantially.
The ibuypower rig in the same config was: 1338.00 (+65.00 shipping) = 1403.00
The alienware rig in the same config was: 1549.00
So i think I really got one hell of a deal here folks
Just had to gush and share lol.

Congrats, on saving some money, I'm glad you got everything you wanted, I kind of forgot about this thread after I posted. But Newegg is always the place to go, at least for me. I don't think I've ever bought anything PC related from anywhere else.

Just wanted to post up the final product in "work mode"

The eyefinity added a bit more expense as I had to shell out 110.00 for an active displayport for the third monitor... my first motherboard was DOA so I had to RMA that and the memory, and buy an better PSU (Antec TP-750).
SO all in all the cheap build did rack up but its soooo worth it.
Finally getting able to play all these badass games at 1080p and most of them in eyefinity resolutions (Dirt2 & Batman Arkham are amazing in eyefinity).
Cheers!
