Supervixen,

Did you get it yet? I just got my revised 17" MBP with 4GB Ram and Hi-Res Glossy screen too. I went with the 250GB HD. It's definately faster than my 17" 2.16GHz 2GB Ram MBP.

You're gona love it.

I did get it on Friday. I've been torn about transferring everything or starting fresh. Right now I'm on the fresh start. I like it. I think I'm going to go for the terabyte external drive so I can transfer everything off my other laptops into one place. It would be nice to consolidate. I'm a little disappointed they say 200GB, but it's really 185GB and I think there was only 168GB of free space. Also, it burns my thighs. I'm lazy and use a laptop literally on my lap.

set your HD up as a NAS(network attached storage)

this way you can move about the house with access to your data and the ability to get to your data remotely

you can do this by purchasing a big HD and plugging it into a special router designed to turn HDs into NAS drivers.... or you can go the much faster and more secure way of getting a NAS system from one of the big manufacturers.

SuperVixen,

Download this to save your lap. You can adjust the fan speed to make the laptop actually quite cooler although you will hear more fan speed.

smcFanControl 2.1.2 software download - Mac OS X - VersionTracker

Also, I would say do the fresh start that's what I did. I saved all my photos, music, and documents onto my 160GB iPod and then reloaded onto my new computer in minutes.

Can you put solid state drives in a Mac?

I just put them as secondary drives in mine, and all my developers laptops, and these things SCREAM. Blazing fast. Pricey, but worth it, especially in a laptop because like Craigger said (I think that it was that whacko canuck...), on a laptop, everything touches the drive.

You may be able get them, but the sizes are stlll relatively small like 64GB. It would be cool when they are 200GB+.

personally, I would recommend not using that. besides the obvious warranty issue (if it ever arises), I found my Powerbook to be running 5-10* warmer than its designed operating range whenever I had it on anything other than a flat desk/counter etc.

to me thats like removing the thermostat on your car...

the 200gb/186gb thing is on everything.

the manufacturers rate a MB at 1024kb, while the HDD manufacturers rather it at 1000kb - hence the discrepancy.

as for only having the 168gb of free space, thats just space AFTER the OS is installed on the HDD, so no worries about a class action suit against apple.

as for the burning, just toss a pillow under there.

Cheers.
