Dunno if they are available in the US, but Teufel makes pretty solid speakers for "novice" audiophiles. You can get a decent system for about 1k.

I have one hooked up to my PC and I love it!

Look at Zaph|Audio SR-71's. I have them, and they are stunning. Paired with an SVS Sonosub, it's probably better than a commercial movie theater, hell, I know it is.

Don't forget Teufel also makes the arguably best high-end THX surround sound systems in the world for home theaters. If I ever build my own home theater I'll definitely buy Teufel system.

No idea if they are available in the US. On their homepage Lautsprecher Teufel - Lautsprecher, Heimkino und HiFi I can only see Germany, Austria and Switzerland as possible countries to order from.

But don't despair, you guys have Miller&Kreisel for THX surround systems over there and they're not exactely bad either HOME LOUDSPEAKERS | MK Sound Loudspeakers: The Choice of Professionals
Might not be very nice to look at but I dare you to watch an action movie with a MK soundsystem and not be blown away. You think the bullets are flying all around you.

I'm ashamed to admit that I've been using Bose speakers for the past few years for my home entertainment system. I recently visited a friend that has a beautiful Linn system, and I was floored.

I've been looking at this as an upgrade:

What is the consensus for Crystal Accoustics?
