Ferrari To Make an SUV?
#22

Don't go getting you're panties in a bunch just yet, but rumors have been flying around the net lately about a new SUV concept being worked up to join the rest of the Italians in the Ferrari stable. The name given to this blasphemy against the name of Ferrari at this point is FS 599 Fuoristrada. Yes, the 599 denotes the engine stolen from the 599 GTB Fiorano already in the lineup. Things are so sketchy at this point that all the artists' renderings floating about that are complete flights of fancy. One is a sort of modernized hairy-chested study of the Testarossa, the other harkens back to the good old days of racing, yet another is closer to the design language of the Enzo and Fiorano.
The gents over at World Car Fans are reporting some very impressive specs including a target of 600 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque (~442 lb.ft.), all wheel drive routed mostly to the rear meats, and a less than five second run to 62. That's Cayenne Turbo and Cherokee SRT territory (only). The word on the tubes is that some kind of concept will be debuting at the 2010 Geneva show. In any case, if it makes it to the street, we look forward to test driving the eventual result, and then lambasting it with witty puns about Honda Civics and bad punk rock.

ts-- topspeed is sayin 2010

After rumors about a Lamborghini SUV, is now time to talk about a future Ferrari SUV. And even if Ferrari is about supercars, it seems that company has finally decided that they need a SUV in their line-up. Maybe the conclusion came after Lamborghini decided to built one, or maybe after seeing the success of the Porsche Cayenne, but, in any case the SUV is on its way and will be launched sometime in 2010.
In the past there were rumors saying that Maserati will build an SUV based on the Kubang concept unveiled at the 2003 Detroit Auto Show. If built the SUV was supposed to share the same platform with the future Alfa Romeo SUV. We suppose that a future Ferrari SUV will share the same platform with the production version of the Maserati Kubang.
The 2010 Ferrari SUV will be placed (regarding its dimensions) between the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and BMW X5, so this means it will have a length of approx 4.6 meters and will weight around 5000 lbs due to the use of high tech materials

Porsche has done it.
Lamborghini has done it(and failed). I wouldn't be surprised if they tried again.
Ferrari....eh...I dunno. They have such a pedigree making their sports cars but I wouldn't hold it against any manufacturer these days.

From a logical and slightly cynical perspective....
I seriously doubt this will ever happen. Ferrari can't afford the R&D costs for this alone. Maybe with Maser and Alfa/Lancia/Fiat? That makes a little more sense, but still not enough IMHO. Maybe they will badge engineer a few for the show circuit then announce it as a full blown Maser and A/L/F range - much like Porsce, Audi, and VW with their SUVs.
Pricing. Based on the 599s MSRP, such a beast as this SUV would have to go for.... say $350K. With the US economy no longer on the boil (no R word from me), who in their right mind is going to drop that sort of money on an SUV? There would need to be, at a guess, 5-10 thousand of these folks each year to make the project even remotely viable. The closest Ferrari to an SUV - the 612 - is hardly setting the showroom floor alight. Last I heard they were going well under MSRP if you ask nicely.
