Post Porsche builds 200,000th Cayenne

When the Porsche Cayenne first launched in 2002, expectations weren't exactly high for the SUV. The media — as well as some of the public — didn't think Porsche could pull off an SUV, and the automaker didn't even expect the SUV to fly off the shelf. Not to say that the Cayenne is a bad vehicle, just not the typical vehicle you'd expect from Porsche. But it looks as though the decision makers at Porsche knew what they were doing as the 200,000th Cayenne has rolled off the assembly line.

Lucky number 200,000 — which rolled of Porsche's Leipzig factory — was a red Cayenne GTS.

When Porsche first launched the Cayenne SUV, they expected to sell about 20,000 annually. But the Cayenne's popularity took off and Porsche now sells about 40,000 examples a year.

Not only was the Cayenne the company's first SUV, it will also serve as the platform for the first Porsche hybrid.

The 200,000th Cayenne was not the only German milestone this week as BMW built its 5,000,000 5-series just days ago.
